Ghosts of the Green Room II

Here's a post from 2010 that has quite a few good links that still work. Additionally, here's an excellent article about the Fulton Opera House.

"He commissioned the renowned Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan (who later designed the Lancaster County Courthouse) to create this building, which was erected in 1852. Named Fulton Hall, after the county’s steam engine pioneer, Robert Fulton, it was built on the foundation of Lancaster’s pre-Revolutionary jail, where in 1763, a vigilante gang known as the “Paxtang Boys” massacred the last of the Conestoga Indians being held there for their protection. This was a monumental event throughout the colonies and became the subject matter for the first plays ever written on American soil – A Dialogue Between Andrew Trueman and Thomas Zealot About the Killing the Indians at Cannestogoe and Lancaster and The Paxton Boys, a Farce. The exterior wall of the jail courtyard is now the back wall of the theatre."

I hope those who stop by frequently are getting a sense of the importance of the Conestoga Massacre and the profound  ripple effect it had on the colonies more than a decade before the Declaration of Independence was signed.

FYI - on this date in 1777, General George Washington and ~12,000 troops of the Continental Army entered their winter encampment @ Valley Forge, PA.

Conestoga Rock - dedicated in 1924

More in a few.
