12/12/12...so what?

Do you remember where you were @ 12:34 a.m. on 5/6/78?

I do...was working the Saturday evening shift at a trucking company in Plains and studying for finals in my senior year @ Wilkes College.

I find all this fascination with dates, like 12/12/12 or 12/21/12, to be mindless fodder for the uninformed and/or disconnected. The Gregorian Calendar ( decreed by a Pope, no less ) has been around for 430 years; the Earth - about 4.5 billion years.

And the universe?  Well...that number is constantly under revision.

The Mayans were incredible observers of celestial cycles. Lacking anything resembling sophisticated instrumentation, they recorded their observations - which more than likely spanned 1,000 years or more - with incredible accuracy. Their concept of time wasn't limited to digital or analog watches.

The Gregorian Calendar did not exist when the Mayans finished their now famous stone calendar. They knew nothing of it. What they did know was that the winter solstice would take place on the date we've established as 12/21/12. Plus, from my perspective, they just ran out of space on their circular calendar. Nothing more, nothing less. If their culture was still around today, they'd be busy chiseling away at a new stone calendar and getting ready to pitch the old one...just like we do every January 1st.

Enough for now. I've got to head out and pick up that last truckload of bottled water and freeze-dried rations for the underground bunker. And fill up both cars and the last of my 32 gas cans for the generator.

P.S. Got batteries?

Later....maybe.
