Out of ~400 or so folks in our Philadelphia office...only 30 made it in today. I was the first one to arrive at ~7:25 a.m., and I had 5 call-outs in my voice mail waiting for me. Funny thing is, most of those less than hardy souls live in the city of Philadelphia, and I live ~40 miles out in the suburbs. Anyway, when all was said and done, out of 13 people in my department, only three made it in. We still probably had the highest attendance rate in the office today.
The blizzard had fully kicked in by ~11, and it was funny to watch the snow falling...sideways. Within seconds, the Philly skyline was almost completely obscured. For reference, Amtrak's 30th St. Station is the building on the lower right, and the Schuylkill River ( and Surekill Expressway ) is between me and center city.
Anyway, Hizzoner Nutter ( the mayor ) told everyone the city was basically shutting down by 1, and the firm let everyone who showed up leave at 12:30. Off I went, and I had to fight the crowds on the platform @ 30th St. to ensure I would get a seat on the train.
The train ride to Lansdale was uneventful; I think there might have been a total of 10 people on the entire train. Having an AWD vehicle ( Subaru Outback ) with brand new tires made the six mile ride home equally tame. I was more concerned about the other guys, especially those idiots without their lights on in a near whiteout. Fortunately, I was one of the few cars on the road.
As I'm pecking away here, it's snowing even harder. Tomorrow should be a real treat, as they've already announced that Philly's schools will be closed. I'll end this post with a sure sign of spring I saw when I got home this afternoon. However, I think he's pushing it...just a little.
